In name only...

Let me share something that is from the deepest part of my heart right now. Maybe you will be able to identify with it, maybe not. You see, this quote kind of sets the stage for it:

“But if Christians are such in name only, they are like the salt that has lost its savor. They have no influence for good in the world. Through their misrepresentation of God they are worse than unbelievers.”--The Desire of Ages, p. 306.

A friend and I were talking about that whole idea recently. The idea of being a Christian in name only. And it's scary. Why? Because if that's the way we are, we're worse than unbelievers. And I wonder. Am I that way? I talk about service. I try to encourage others. I attempt to uphold standards. But am I really a Christian, not in name only? A Christian should be Christ-like. Christ was loving. More than we can comprehend. He was an active laborer. In fact, He rarely ever rested from His labors of love, healing, teaching, raising to life, and so much more. He cared little for the things of this world. But He cared ultimately for the people of this world. Oh, to be that way. I know many of you are close to that. Many of you are already devoting your lives to His service, giving your all for Him. Don't ever stop. And please pray for us who haven't been able to get there yet. It's a tough road sometimes, with many obstacles, just getting to the point where you aren't so busy that you can break away. And for those of you who are in the same position as I, who want to be active missionaries, but just can't seem to get there, keep trying. Let's push for it with all we're worth. Because...

“It is in working for others that they will keep their own souls alive.” --Historical Sketches, p. 291.

By God's grace, all that we can ever go through, will be worth it. Let's strive to be Christians. Not in name only.

In His strength,
-Schane

  1. Thankyou for sharing that thought. It is very important that we be "doers of the word not hearers only". James 1:22
